Running head: NURSING 1 Psychopharmacological Student Name Institution Affiliation 1. Explain the agonist-to-antagonist spectrum of action of psychopharmacologic agents In pharmacology, to understand the functioning of agonist-to-antagonist, it is significant to understand the terms’ definition. In defining agonist, it is the chemical receptor that sticks to a receptor and a trigger of the biological response after the receptor’s activation. On the other hand, an antagonist hinders an agonist’s action, and an opposite agonist causes an inverse action from the agonist ( Stahl, 2013)Psychopharmacological Assignment Discussion Paper.

The antagonist actions are the opposite of the agonist action. According to Stahl (2013), there are different agonist concept categories up to four groups, namely inverse agonist, partial agonist, agonist, and antagonist. The agonist opens up the maximum channel amount and frequency permitted by the binding site. At the same time, an antagonist reclines in the center of the continuum on resting condition with the channel’s infrequent opening. The ion medium is put in a closed and inactive situation by the agonist. According to Stahl (2013), Ions can be returned into their previous resting state in each instance that the antagonists block anything in the agonist continuum as it holds the power to do so. An agonist sticks to a receptor site and generates a response while an antagonist neutralizes the drug NURSING 2 and hinders the receptor. Psychopharmacological Assignment Discussion Paper
